Carl Durance

Wood Turning/Fused Glass

Growing up on a large chicken farm in Ontario, working with his hands came naturally to Carl, instilling the values of a strong work ethic and a respect for all things natural. His creative instinct and desire for challenge led to the position of Associate Director of a leading-edge computer software group at the University of Waterloo. Carl now focuses that creative energy and desire to learn to ever-increasing artistic endeavours across a wide range of media, including wood, glass, metal, clay, and stone. Carl lives in a tranquil country setting in Georgian Bluffs, hemmed between the shores of Colpoy's Bay and the Niagara Escarpment.

Nature provides an extensive palette of colour, grain, and texture from which finished pieces evolve through a series of many steps along the evolutionary path of a finished piece. The natural palette can be supplemented by colour with dyes and paints, texturing through carving and pyrography, and inclusions of epoxy, metal, or glass, with the intent to compliment, never replace, the beauty of the natural elements.
