Susan Adaskin

Fused Glass

Susan’s passion for art bloomed early while growing up in Winnipeg as she observed and joined her father in painting on canvasses and framing paintings. Susan’s parents and grandparents surrounded her with art from all over the world. Among these were paintings from many different artists, Inuit & New Guinea sculpture, pottery, and textiles that created her rich and colourful childhood home. Susan’s grandparents, both renowned musicians were also lovers and collectors of art. Their friendship circle included Group of Seven artist Lawren Harris, and other BC artists, Jack Shadbolt and Emily Carr. In mid-childhood, Susan dabbled in drawing, basic pottery, painting, then finally in high school she fell in love with glass as a creative medium. Here in teenage, she was introduced to stained glass art which she worked with for over two decades. Upon moving to Toronto in 1989, while employed as an elementary school teacher, she met a fellow teacher, and skilled artist who also had worked in stained glass. Soon afterward, this friend introduced Susan to glass fusing. Experimenting together extensively, they collaborated using different fusing techniques and sharing ideas. This has kept these two friends closely connected through glass fusing & friendship over a span of three decades. In 2018, Susan retired from working as a school principal in Toronto, & bought a house in Owen Sound, Ontario.
